In Tokyo: Shibuya / Harajuku / Roppongi
Those are the “playgrounds” of the young. Be sure to go out to Chiba for Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Sea, too. It takes at least a day for each.
For sightseeing, I always recommend Meiji Shrine, Asakusa Kannon Temple and the Imperial Palace.
Day trips from Tokyo: Hakone / Mt. Fuji and Fuji-Q highlands / Nikko / Kamakura / Yokohama
But do try to get down to the Kansai (Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto, Nara) if possible. Tokyo is very cosmopolitan. Kansai is a bit more laid back.
