Physical activity has really helped me to break way from the TV. In warmer months, I would usually break away by going for a walk outside. THAT helped me tremendously. My “panic alarm” would set off when I would start to feel the itch to watch TV (or if I’d catch myself sitting down for a ‘second’ and realize 10 minutes later I was still there) and running to the door and going for a walk became such a successful response to that alarm. But that’s just me! In the winter months, one of my favorite things to do is turn off the TV, turn on music and clean the house. If I want to watch TV more than 1 hr a day, it has to be while I’m exercising.
My HH (handsome husband) LOVES to play video games. I personally cant stand to watch him play them. Sometimes its fun, but most of the time, they annoy me. One of the most successful things I’ve done to be in the same room with my HH is reading a book. SO hard to do if you don’t have anything to listen to. So what I did was I downloaded two different CDs from iTunes. One is a complete CD of listening to a fireplace crackle and the second is a complete CD of nature sounds. I LOVE it! Reading transports me to another world, and the audio CDs just help all the more! I love, love, love it.
I hope that’s helped and given you some ideas! Someone mentioned that if you’re doing things outside the room of the TV, your family will start to miss you and come find you. I’ve found this especially true with my husband! We recently got a piano, and so I practice in another room while he’s playing video games, and usually within 1/2 hr or so, he comes to find me and usually sits down to join me at the piano! It’s AMAZING what that’s done for our life :) I never thought he would ever be joining me to play songs together!
