It’s very simple and very difficult at the same time; your success depends on no one but you.
The most important thing is to take care of yourself physically. If you don’t have a beauty routine, begin one. Wash and moisturize your face every night with mild products. If you drink whole milk, replace that with skim milk and begin drinking 2 glasses a day (this will help you gain or keep a lean figure) and always, always drink 8 glasses of water a day.
A model, beginner or not, must have a portfolio with professional pictures. Don’t waste $300 on professional photos when lots of photographers will do what is called a TFP (time for prints) shoot. If they like your look and feel that you can expand their portfolio as well, they will give you free photos in exchange for your time. Go to any search engine and search for photographers who do TFP shoots in your state.
Then, it’s all about self-promotion. There are many sites out there that can help you post your portfolio for free. Don’t be fooled by scams. If a website wants money to post your portfolio or view castings, look somewhere else. There are dozens of sites like this, such as MuseCube.com. You can also try sending a headshot to agencies. Never sign with anyone who wants YOU to pay THEM. Most of them are scams.
Also, this is extremely important- especially when you are starting out, NEVER go to a shoot alone. Bring an escort. Your Dad, your brother, a boyfriend or husband, your mamma if she’s tough- not a girl friend. Most photographers are legitimate, but there are a few creeps out there. Discuss your desire to bring an escort with each photographer before hand- but be polite and professional. If they throw a fit, don’t shoot with them. If you can’t find someone to go with you, it may be a good idea to invest in pepper spray.
And #1- believe in yourself! If you believe you can make it, no one can stand in your way! Just because one job or agency may turn you down doesn’t mean everyone will. I hope this helps!
