Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

City Hall > Community Guidelines

The Community Guidelines help define the spirit of 43 Things and what it means to be a member of the 43 Things community. These Community Guidelines are here to help explain the general mores of 43 Things. Your use of 43 Things is subject to these Guidelines and our Terms of Use.

What you SHOULD and SHOULDN’T be doing while using 43 Things:

Be supportive
43 Things is a site about people’s goals. The site has been created with a positive intent and we ask that you help further that intention. Cheer on someone you admire or share words of encouragement. As your mother may have said, “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all”.

Be respectful
43 Things is a community of many types of people who may not think what you think, believe what you believe or see what you see. So, be polite and respectful in your interactions with other members.

Go public with your dreams
43 Things is a public site. You should post on 43 Things and interact with others knowing that it’s all going down in public. If you use your real name that will be picked up by search engines and folks will be able to find it. Sharing your goals can change your life. But use a pseudonym if you aren’t ready to broadcast your identity and your dreams at the same time.

Keep it clean
43 Things is not an adult site or a site where anything goes. You must be 13 years or older to use the site and any content you add to the site ought to be “safe for work”. That is, if your boss came by and saw what you were doing she might be curious about why you were doing this during work, but not in fear for your mortal soul. Worse than posting porn is posting information that can lead to others being harmed. It is not OK to post advice on how to hurt yourself, whether that involves suicide, eating disorders, or becoming a pirate.

Enjoy 43 Things!
43 Things is an awesome community. Enjoy your time here, make friends and get inspired.

Upload content that isn’t yours
Respect the copyright of others. This means using your own content or content in the public domain for your entries and images.

Spam the site (or use it for commercial purposes)
People generally know spam when they see it. Commercial content that is not germane to a goal, or promotional content that is repeatedly posted are examples of spam. You should think twice before ever posting commercial content on 43 Things. 43 Things is for personal use only. If you sell or promote products, services or yourself through your 43 Things page, we will suspend your account.

Be Creepy
Offering unwanted advances is not OK. Posting suggestive or inappropriate photos is clearly creepy. Don’t do it. Posting photos that include frontal nudity, genitalia and/or “intimate moments” are not welcome. This applies to your profile photo as well as entry photos. Users will report these photos and they will be removed. Users may also report accounts posting graphic nudity and your account will automatically be suspended without warning.

Users monitor 43 Things
43 Things has great users which is what makes it such a great community. The Robot Co-op does not actively seek out violations of our terms of service. We rely on users to report and assess inappropriate, commercial, illegal or abusive activities. We need your help. Your two best tools are the report this user link on every profile page and the flag this photo as inappropriate link you see after you click on any picture.

Reporting spam, commercial use, abuse, copyright infringement
If you run across spam, blatant commercial use, abusive behavior, harmful advice, copyright infringement or other objectionable things, don’t panic. If it’s a light offense you may help the user out by commenting and educating them that the content violates these community guidelines. If that doesn’t work please use the report this user link located on every user’s profile page.

Blocking users
If you have come into contact with a user you no longer want to interact with (but you don’t think they should be suspended from the site) go to the user’s page and click report this user then select they’re harassing me (I want to block them).
