winterize my bicycle (read all 3 entries…)
Lights on

I’ve recharged the cateye tripleshot that got me through last winter. I also have a E500 single-light as a spare.

I need to pick up more wool stuff, but that’s for me, not the bike. Also, I’m going to start looking at bikes now that the summer rush has passed. TI Cycles has a Co-Motion on sale in my size…

Which Co-Motion?

Are you talking to Brian there at Ti Cycles?

I’ve been looking at the Americano. (The 53cm should be very close.) I tried both the Nor’Wester and the Americano in the spring.

Any thoughts on CoMos or TI Cycles?

Thoughts

I bought the less beefy Nor’Wester, rather than the Americano. I think if you want a touring bike and a road bike, then you should get the Americano. But if your goal is to have one bike that can play both roles, get the Nor’Wester.

Here’s my facing up to reality—I don’t even like car camping any more, and the likelihood I’d be doing fully-loaded touring was close to nil. But doing supported or credit card touring, sure. And doing long rides like STP and RSVP, of course. So I was looking for a butter-like road feel, and all day comfort. I did not need the extra weight and sturdiness of the Americano. YMMV.

The folks at TiCycles are very nice, and I like Brian a lot, who sold me the Nor’Wester. But it’s simply not in a convenient location for those of us on the Eastside. I continue to spread my business between REI and Sammamish Valley Cycle in Redmond for the most part, and only stop in to TiCycles when I’m in the neighborhood.

How do you like your Nor'Wester?

How do you like your Nor’Wester? (I think the only time I’ve seen you biking has been on the tandem…)

I looked at both models back in June. At the time, they couldn’t help me out and I haven’t gotten back to the U-district.

I was leaning towards the Nor’Wester for the improved efficiency (though the Americano is what’s 10% off). The particular model I test drove had the ultegra STI “racing” package and its ride was harsher than the Americano “touring” option. I rationalized most of that as being from the narrow (23 vs 37mm) tires.

Rodriguez’s bikes were fine, and less expensive, but their hours are even more inconvenient. One concern I had about the bikes is they’re mostly Campy components. (At least with Shimano, I have SRAM or Nashbar or Performance as alternate sources.) They haven’t been able to suggest the gearing range I’m seeking. The off-the-shelf CoMo would be fine.

STI "Racing" option?

Well, I have the STI racing option, except I didn’t know it was supposed to be a racing option. I have 28 mm tires, and I think 32 spokes, both of which I consider to be more light touring than racing.

Since we’re approximately the same size, you should borrow my bike sometime, and give it a spin, and see how it feels to you.

Also, I should put you in touch with Brian, so you don’t have a repeat of your crappy customer service experience.
