Hike the Narrows of Zion N.P.

Worth doing!

One of my greatest hikes ever  — 1 year ago

Trekking poles make all the difference.

Comments:

I don’t know… While doing the overnight would give you more time to explore (and I surely didn’t feel like I had enough time for that) I think it would be a pain in the butt to carry a full pack through there. So it’s a trade off. I guess if I had an opportunity to do it again, I would camp too, just to do something different and see it in better detail.

I think half the work of planning a hike is trying to figure out what kind of conditions you’re likely to face. Having hiked it already, you’ve got that one figured out. Did you hike up to the area that has the campsites? The canyon opens up a little and it looks like a pleasant enough spot to spend the night.

I hike in Colorado a lot and I usually end up sharing the summit with a marmot or two. They’re a bit more tame up there and usually they’re muscling in for a bite of my lunch.

What part of Texas are you from? I’m in the Dallas area, Denton to be exact.

under a foot of snow

I’m up on the Panhandle where we are still under a foot of snow. I love seasons, but I am getting royally tired of winter. Plus, I live WAY out in the country so there are no nice snow plows making things nicer for us.

I didn’t hike all the way to the first set of campsites. I explored Orderville Canyon instead and LOVED it.

Have you ever done any canyoneering?

Denton got some snow, didn’t they?

I think the coldest I’ve ever been was on the Panhandle. On the other hand, living there would cut hours off my drives to Colorado and New Mexico.

I’ve messed around with some slot canyons here and there, but nothing that required repelling.

We got dusted with snow and we had a little ice, but really it was quite light. We were at the bottom edge of all that weather.

So you’re a writer? I’m so envious. I would love it if someone paid me to write. What sort of stuff do you write? Well, books obviously…

What do I write?

I am an essayist. Think Merrill Gilfillan, Verlyn Klinkenbord, E.B. White, or even Edward Abbey. But, of course, I am not in their league. They are just my writing heroes.

My first book is a collection of essays about intimacy with the land. My second book is about journeys and hiking and bravery. Its been a decade since I got a paycheck for writing anything, and my writing has evolved (THANK GOODNESS) since I wrote for magazine publications.

But, someday… maybe in the next 12 months, I will hold my first book in my hands… that will be payment enough. The book is at an academic press and they are notoriously slow… think molasses in Alaska.

Very cool. I hope to see you in print soon. Keep me posted.
