Give blood (read all 2 entries…)
I tried

I tried to give blood today. My iron level was perfect. My blood pressure was perfect. What wasn’t perfect? My heart rate. They took my pulse three different times. By the third time, it was actually getting faster, so I wasn’t allowed to donate.

I’m beginning to wonder if my heart rate is always faster than normal. While my doctor has never said anything about it, I remember when I was in high school we did an experiment in a science class about the different rates that everyone’s heart beat at. Mine was the highest in the whole class.

I’ll try again the next time, but if my heart rate is still too high, I might have to give up on this one.

May we know what your resting heart rate was that prevented you from giving blood?

I’m imagining it must have been over 80 or 90?

Yes

Sure. I don’t know what it was the first time she took it, she didn’t tell me. The second time was 95, and the third time was actually (get this) 120.

I believe she said it had to be lower than 90, but I can’t honestly remember.

Yes, you shouldn't give ...

Yes, if your resting heart-rate is 120, I would say you shouldn’t give blood.

Obviously it was a sudden increase as a result of anxiety, but even so … your body went into that mode and taking blood from you could traumatize your bod.

The only time I have ever recorded a resting heart-rate of 120 was in 1990 after watching The Silence of the Lambs in the theater.

20 minutes later standing outside the theater I counted my heart-rate: 120.

I can always try again later

I have to schedule an appointment with my doctor at some point this month for a checkup, so I can ask then if she’s noticed that kind of pattern with my heart rate.

Right now, I’m not too worried since I exercise, and my blood pressure was 120/79.

It could very well be one of those things that’s normal for me, but not for everyone else.
