On finding Shiva during a walking meditation (part 2)

The statue of Shiva is often depicted as Shiva standing on a baby, or a man looking at a leaf. It symbolizes the part of us that is so caught up in the physical world (observing the leaf) that we forget that we have God dancing on our backs…

So, as I walked in meditation, I smiled at the synchronicity of seeing Shiva written on the sidewalk, as a reminder that, amid my little life, the entire universe is dancing on my back… :-)

Wow...

This was a really beautiful little reminder, and put in such a poetic light. It reminded me of poems by Hafiz; perhaps you have heard of him? He was a “Great Sufi Master,” and all of his little poems have that little reminder that the universe (or God) is right there. Here is one of my favorites:

I love Hafiz...

so yes, I do know of him and his unique combination of spirit and humor and ecstasy. I am told that in his native Iran his books sell better than the Koran or any other book… seven hundred years after he lived. Thank you for the inclusion of his little poem.

This bit of Hafiz reminds me

Some people go to church or synagogue, or whatever, and they don’t really partake of the spirituality that is offered there. And at the same time, they really enjoy going anyway.

It’s like as if they were to go to restaurants, and smell the wonderful smells, and look at the pretty menu, and have a great time with their friends while doing so, but never actually eat any meals there.

Me, I want the full meal deal. If I’m going to bother with organized religion, I want to have several courses, with wine, and coffee with dessert.

to enjoy the full meal, though

you actually have to know how to eat (i.e., pray).

Not so easy for everybody. For me, it’s taken years, and the surroundings/people/music/etc. have to be just so, or I just lose my appetite.

Prayer is just one possible dish

There’s many others.
