So I think I can safely say that we’re moved in. Chip has a job offer that he’s likely to take. Our car should be coming next week. We still have some nitty gritty details to take care of and we still have a few boxes lying around to be unpacked as soon as we get one or two more items of furniture. Work is begining to feel not new anymore and I’ve been on a business trip to Ho Chi Minh city. I think it’ll still take time to decide whether the life change is “worth it” but I’m enjoying the experience so far.
Comments:
Hi
We moved without jobs. We moved in early September and took about two months off = stayed with my parents, hung out with my kid. I started sort of looking around in November. I got a job offer in January. My husband continued to contract until the end of the year for his old company. It took him a little longer to find a job and he just started. So depending on your field, the level of seniority you’re looking at, how picky you want to be about the job you get and your contacts, be prepared to be unemployed for a few months.
Advice:
Best time of year to job hunt (I’m told) is the March time frame. After Chinese New Year. People often stick around for year end bonuses and then quit, so jobs open up. The worst time of year is end of year (when we started).
The American Association does have a career center. Its a good place to start looking and making contacts and talk to other folks who have made the same move. At the very worst, you can find yourself an admin-ish job to tide you over before you find yourself a job in your field. You don’t have to be a US citizen.
If you have family or a place to stay while you job hunt, that’ll help a lot.
And the good news is that the job market is doing very well at the moment.
Good luck! Drop me a note if/when you do come.
