learn gaelic
Gaelic is not a language! 2 years ago

This is the one thing about foreigners that REALLY annoys me. i am 100% irish and have learnt the language since i was a bub. GAELIC is not a language, the irish national languages are english and IRISH. you will never come across an irish person who says they speak “gaelic”, irish people hate it when foreigners ask about “gaelic”. it doesn;t exist! and, NO, the irish word for “irish” is definitely NOT gaelic, it is GAEILGE. (pronounced G-WHALE-GA) but no one says that unless they are speaking in irish. please at least change the title of this, it is such an insult to our culture.

i should also warn you, irish is a hidieous language and not very useful either- a very very small amount of irish people speak irish conversationally- only those in the very depths of the countryside. most people forget all about it once they leave school. although we are, of course, proud of our national language.

Comments:

Who said anything about Ireland? ;-) There’s at least 3 variants I can think of, including the language spoken in Ireland. Can’t speak for the others here, but I’m more interested in the language spoken in the highlands (and taught in Glasgow), although I perfectly accept the point of your post, particular over how much use it has.
