I want to join Mensa  — 4 months ago

I’ve taken iq tests many times. It’s wierd to trust a gut feeling on “spot the pattern” and be right most of the time without understanding the rule. It seems I keep coming just under the qualifying, acheiving scores from 126 to 132. I just took the Mensa funtest and got 23 out of 30, it said there’s a chance I could make it. No surprises in the ones I missed, just in the ones I got without knowing the pattern, just going with my gut. Perhaps there’s greater innate intelligence than I know of and the only thing separating me from my soon to be genius friends is a better understanding of math.

Should I take your bait and point out “you’re”?

You bring up a good point. Do I want to associate myself with socially awkward geniuses and their “smarter than thou” attitudes? Nah, I’m going to assume those low esteem jibes were shed in High School.

Scientific American reports that iq tests can be skewed with study and prep, the best measurement tools we have aren’t precise. Or maybe it’s the brain that isn’t. Either way, luck and prep can both make the difference between in or out. So does the time of day I take the test.

Maybe a more worthy goal would be getting a Macarthur Genius Grant, but I haven’t found the book that helps with that yet.
