make a difference
Make a change

This has been bothering me for quite a while. I am sure that this is what I want to do, a way to make my life meaningful. I chose a career in development aid to do just that, make a difference. However, my everyday tasks seem so far away from meaning anything. I’m not sure how to make it work, how to make it change. So, I am adopting this goal to remind me what I want to do with my life.

You are an important part of the universe.

Although it might seem like what you do on a daily basis is small or unrelated to the bigger picture of what your organization does, all of the work you do each day needs to be handled, and if it weren’t things would start to fall apart. Maybe you’re stuffing envelopes for donor letters. If those letters don’t get out, no one is sending in money to support the organization. Maybe you’re proofreading a grant that’s going to a foundation. Do you think they’ll view your organization as a competent, worthy choice if the grant has misspellings, typos, etc.? Maybe you’re running errands for higher-ups, like getting them lunch. That’s an enormous help to that person who can stay focused (and fueled by the food) and can keep writing that grant, or making phone calls to decision makers and donors who are going to ultimately make a huge difference in what your organization can do to provide aid to people who need it. Not knowing specifically what you do, I can’t address your daily tasks exactly, but I hope these examples help. If you are feeling that your work doesn’t matter because people at your office make you feel that way, you should find a new place to work. You are valuable and you should be around people who know it. And, you should know it, too! Please believe that about yourself.
