Gratitude List: 1 September 2008 2 months ago

1. For suffering from bipolar disorder. I was diagnosed in March 1998 but I have had it even longer. I have learned much about myself, reality and others thanks to my suffering. For this I am grateful. Although, I do wish that the education was not so traumatic.

2. For getting the start date for my full-time job as a mental health support worker in Aberdeen. I start on 8 September 2008.

3. For today being the first day of September 2008. I will be moving back to Aberdeen on 7 September 2008. I am really looking forward to that. 11 years ago, on 29 September 1997 I had moved from Aberdeen to Dundee to study medicine. I failed to complete my studies due to bipolar but have become skilfull in being able to handle anything and everything about life. I am much more mindful, grateful, optimistic, compassionate and constructive now than I was 11 years ago.

4. For watching our son sleep. I love listening to the sound of air going in and out of his frequently open mouth. I love the way he moves around in his sleep and travels all over the bed!

5. For getting better at being mindful, grateful, optimistic, compassionate and constructive.

6. For having learned to love those who do not love me, as well as loving those who do love me.

7. For receiving and giving cheers on 43 things.

Thank you

I hope I will remain well enough to keep the job. I am moving to Aberdeen on 7 Sept. The job starts on 8 Sept. My wife and son are joining me on 14 Sept. Don’t have internet access in the Aberdeen flat yet so there might be a gap in posting updates here.

I hope so too

Good luck, I wish you all the best :)

good luck with the move

A friend just moved last weekend and I had forgotten how tiring it is. Plus his place is in total chaos. Make the beds first so you’ll have a good place to collapse.

Thank you

Yes, moving is a lot of work. We have been busy with packing, etc.

I am really looking forward to this job as all my previous jobs were things like cleaning offices, librararies, hospitals and fish factories (stinks). And things like being a book shelver in a library, being a laundry operator and being a telephone call center operator. I have also been volunteering with various charities in various roles over my life time. I will keep up my volunteering but will be reducing the hours as I will be working full-time from 8 Sept 2008.

I will get paid £11,985 per year before deductions for taxes which would be at least £1,985, so the net annual pay would be about £10,000 for me, my wife and son (that’s £883 per month) – the mortgage repayment is £663 per month – so we have £220 per month to live on which is impossible for three people plus all the bills for gas, electricity, council tax, etc. This is the first time I am getting paid so much per year. We will be subletting the flat to two tenants if we can find anyone who wants to live with us. It’s a three bedroomed flat and we will be converting the lounge into the fourth bedroom. This way, our son can have his own room for the first time. We still have more than £36,000 of debt to pay back. Life is a continuous struggle for existence. Of course there are at least 6 billion people who struggle even more than us.

My wife is still too ill to work. She has She has been off since 13 June 2008. Of course, if I were well, I would have been earning as a doctor from July 2001. A Junior doctor earns £21,000 before tax per year – that was my wife’s salary for the 10.5 months she worked. All my doctor friends here earn £60,000 before tax as they have been doctors for more than 7 years already (no, I am not envious). As I said earlier, at least 6 billion people struggle even more than us. After all, the wealthiest 10% of humanity (i.e. 670 million people) own 90% of the total wealth of humanity.

doing good work

I think you are going to do a great job. You are a very supportive person. The $$ is just a perk to a good career choice.

Many thanks

I really appreciate your complement. I am loving my job! I am very grateful and glad for this job.

My wife and son may move to Aberdeen on 19 Sept. as my wife has appointments on 18 and 19 Sept. I came down to Dundee on 12 Sept and am going up to Aberdeen again today (14 Sept) with the moving van.

New Isabella is giving thanks...

Thinking of you...

...this Monday as you begin your new job, and hoping that all goes well for you and the family. Moving is hard for me, and starting a new job is hard too, so I’m sure you’ll have your hands full for awhile. Hang in there.

Thank you so much

((((New Isabella)))) I really appreciate your kind wishes and support. The job is going very well and I really love it. It’s the first time in my life when I have loved a job. I have loved similar unpaid voluntary work before but didn’t have such a job before.
