Cattails and their Leaves

I had a wetland garden back home, I can’t grow one here for so many reasons but that does not deter me from loving cat tails as I do.

Countless hours were spent as a child with me spreading the seeds every way as I walked up and down the neighborhood road. They were a staple in my flower arrangements and in constant supply on my drying rack.

A lot of people don’t know that the leaves of the cattail is dried, re hydrated and twisted into a rope. This rope is then used to create rush seats. I used to do this for a living, it’s my greatest love.

If given the chance to weave or any other job, weaving would win. It is calming and very relaxing to me. I used to cut and dry my own and use them when restoring real rush seats for clients. LOL I could talk cattails for hours.

I love sharing my love of weaving

I’ll show you another this again is from long ago. I stopped taking pictures after a while. I really wish I had not done that, but at the time it seems silly to do so.

This chair is Caned there are two types of that as well pressed cane which is a sheet and you kinda put it in a grove and it’s done. My favorite is called hand caned. There are hundreds of little holes around the chairs edge and you weave these little pieces of splint in and out of one another creating patterns. This one I took a photo of is not my favorite pattern but is most popular with antiques. I love the snow pattern it’s a little harder and more rare to find on antiques.

I just love that you are interested in this. It’s very time consuming but it is so relaxing. My nephew is not a father and in his 20’s, when he was a little one I would lay him in my lap… legs crossed and do hand caning and he would watch it just occupied him. he was a colicky baby and this was on thing that seemed to calm him.

OH the nice memories I have. thank you for prompting me down that road.
