adopt a cat (read all 3 entries…)
It's time. 6 months ago

I miss having a cat around. It’s been a little more than a year since Tasha died; she was one of those amazing, once-in-a-lifetime pets, and I still miss her terribly. But… I’m past the worst of it. I’m at the point now where I can think about getting another cat without feeling sad, or worrying that I’ll just compare the new cat to Tash.

I’m ready.

Comments:

Oh, Bobbin was gorgeous! Tasha was a calico/tortoiseshell, too (well, ‘torbie’, I think they call them: calico with tabby striping). There’s something special about calicos, I think. I know that it’s just a quirk of genetics, and doesn’t really lend itself to particular personality traits, but still. They’re awesome cats.

Even before Tasha started to get sick, I knew I’d be getting another cat eventually. (I actually thought about it a few years ago, knowing that she was getting older, and that I’d have a hard time when I finally lost her. But she was incredibly territorial when it came to other cats, and I didn’t want to put her through that sort of stress.) I know that I’ll still make comparisons, but… it won’t break my heart if the new cat doesn’t want to spend every evening curled up in my lap like Tash used to. A few months ago, I think it might’ve.

I’ll probably go for a young-ish adult cat. Kittens are tempting, but they’re only fuzzy little balls of trouble for a couple of months – it’s the big ol’ lazy cat that you end up spending years with.

I know where you’re coming from. Also with older cats (even if they’re relatively young – Bobbin was 2-3 when I got her) you have some idea of their temperament.

The main criteria for new kitties was no tortoiseshell. I couldn’t do it and as Matilda and Ellie are just so different it’s easier.

Yeah, I’m the same. I can’t get a cat that looks too much like Tasha, whether in colour or just… generally.

What are the ragdolls like? I’ve heard of them, but I don’t really know a lot about the breed. (They don’t seem to be very common around here – I hear of a lot of people who want one, but never anyone who has one.)

Ragdolls - are they right for you?

There’s some good general info on the UK Ragdoll Cat Community website.

There’s also a forum too where you can ask questions.

I didn’t know anyone who had one but as they’re indoor cats there could be others in my village that I just don’t know about.

I found a local breeder who was in charge of rehoming the adult cats and visited them before we committed ourselves to adoption. If you can find something similar near to you then I’d recommend that.

They look like fantastic cats. (That’s an excellent site – most of what I’ve heard/read before just focusses on how cuddly they are.)

I’ve been hoping to find a group like that around here, but no luck so far. I’ll probably end up looking at the more general shelters (SPCA and the like).
