Journal regularly
Fits and starts. 16 months ago

I go through phases. Months will pass where I write regularly in a journal, three or four times a week, if not every day, and then I’ll just… stop. Not completely, but it slows down to one or two entries a month, if I’m lucky.

I’m in one of the slow periods right now. I’m blogging (sporadically), I’m posting to 43T with some regularity, I’m writing quite a bit of fiction, but it’s not quite the same. I want to get back to real pen and paper, and writing just for me.

Heh. Whining seems to be a consistent theme with me, too – when I’m in a good mood, I don’t really think to write in my journal, and when I’m really pissed off at the world, I make a point not to write, simply because… well, who wants to remember that? So most of what I write tends to be just sort of… whiny.

I like the idea of writing first thing in the morning. I’ve always just written in my journal whenever the mood strikes me, but I do prefer to write fiction in the morning – if I haven’t started by nine o’clock, it probably isn’t going to happen at all. Lately, it hasn’t been happening; my focus has been completely shot. I was thinking I might try some sort of writing exercise first thing in the morning, so I’m not just jumping straight into my work-in-progress, but it hadn’t occurred to me to write in my journal.

It seems like that might be a good way to approach it, though: devoting some time in the morning to reflection, and kick-starting my writing brain at the same time. (Which, I suppose, is the basic concept behind morning pages.)

I think I’ll have to try it.
