ban pro-ana
unable to be rational or objective

i hope most of the time i can see both sides of an arguement and thereby come to a considered view, however with pro ana/mia sites i find it impossible, these vile people are preying on the insecurities and concerns of very vunerable people and they are just WRONG!
to an extent i would like to debate the issue but i suspect i would just get angry and upset, however i would like to know what drives these people because i am unable to rationalise it myself.

thank you

firstly i’d like to say thank you for getting in touch,my desire to understand this subject is genuine,i lost someone emotionally and intellectually who was very dear to me and i recognise that this was in no small part due to my obdurate insistence on a stereotypical response to the issue which alienated this person to the extent that she sought the support she needed elsewhere ending our relationship.
however i still hold to the view that these sites whatever the initial motivation do more harm than good,as a libertarian this causes me a desperate conflict but a worthwhile one.
if i felt pro ana/mia sites offered support i’d sign up to help them get thier message across but it is not about support,it’s about enabling and that is a whole differant ball game.
i have yet to come across a bulimic who is happy with thier lot, mostly the most desperate desire is to break the cycle that ruins health and self esteem and thereby alienates them from others.
i agree that as with all conditions people with no knowledge are not best placed to comment on issues but please do not assume you must have the condition to have knowledge of it.
i watched a bright intelligent outgoing pretty young woman become a desperate decietful paranoid abuser in thrall to a condition that was destroying her from the inside and in spite of all i or others did she remained on the path.
as i alluded earlier my responses where stereotypical, youmust eat,you can’t excersise four times a day, drinking three bottles of wine a day is not good for you etc etc,but i now take a more considered view.
please get in touch again if you want to,the key with issues like this is dialogue without histrionics which i admit may have driven my initial posting.
go well in your world

Well-written!

I really enjoyed reading that response—it was very clearly written. I thought I’d share a quote I found in the Wikipedia article on this topic:

b-eat (the Eating Disorders Association of the UK) has remarked that those who seek out pro-ana sites do so “to find support, understanding and acceptance. We don’t call for the sites to be banned, but rather for everyone else to consider how they can also provide that understanding and acceptance so that these sites don’t become the only refuge for someone.”

I thought that was a really fantastic way to put it. From what I’ve seen, there is an underlying similarity between eating disorders and cutting. In both cases, it seems like it’s often a way for the person to have some control over something in their lives, when they feel helpless about so many aspects. Criticism and anger don’t help, because most likely the person already criticises and/or is angry with him/herself…so, these reactions only make the problem worse. But then, I think you’ve already learned that. :)

nice to know

thank you so much for your response,i am heartend that what i posted made sense to someone, you are so right about the control issue, the person i wrote about also engaged in cutting and if anything this was perhaps more distressing than the bulimia because it was not particularly well hidden, with the benefit of some years distance my only wish for her is that she has resolved her demons enough to have a happy and fulfilled life.
