I have a nervous wink 2 months ago

I don’t mean a nervous twitch or squint I mean that I sometimes find myself giving someone a cheeky little wink in formal situations. I find it difficult to control it and it’s annoying as it is a little bit inappropriate.

Ah, if only this were true

I remember being in an interview a few years ago for a (pretty dull but well paid) finance job and right at the end of the interview after they had finished the questions and I was shaking their hands goodbye the main interviewer said “Thank you very much, we’ll be in touch later today.” and I replied, “Ok, thank you for seeing me”. Smile…. wink…. silence. I could see his expression change in a heartbeat.
I do think that the solution shouldn’t be that I should wink less, rather that others should wink more. Try getting a wink into your day tomorrow and you’ll see just how prejudiced the world has become about them. I think it’s only acceptable for tap-dancing grandads to wink in the street without inviting scorn or giving the impression that they are suceptible to lewd behaviour. Be honest, can you think of one respectable/respected person who frequently winks?

Hold on...

I’m going to have to think about this. There must be normal people who wink. Er…Dick van Dyke? I’m pretty sure he does, but he’s probably the tap-dancing grandad you’re on about. I bet there’s more though.

Not sure if this helps, but I once went through a job interview with my flies open. For legal reasons I am compelled to say this wasn’t deliberate. God, imagine if I’d winked then! They’d probably have called the police.

Hope this helps.
