Write a resume (read all 4 entries…)
workshop

Attended a workshop on resume writing on Thursday, and while it was informative on the basics, it depressed me some as the guy was saying you should eliminate very old work history and concentrate on the last several years. I suppose I could include somewhere the type of skills I have from past experience, but I’m going to have to talk to one of their counselors about this stuff. He said I could fill the gaps with volunteer work, which is also rather old…. :/

ugh. I don’t care. I don’t care. I don’t care. I am not going to feel like my life is so much a blank slate that I have no value to anyone anywhere.

watcha think, wren

is he way off?

I do think he's way off!

Maybe other people want to read the kinds of resumes that he’s promoting, but I would rather just have the information…all of it.

I can’t imagine having the time to check and see how many mistakes a person made in a resume…and even if I did have the time, who cares? As long as the finished product is done correctly, so what if changes were made?

I also don’t consider paper passe. At my job, all applications and resumes are sent to me electronically, and I print out the ones that I am seriously considering because I like having a paper copy so that I can circle things and make notes.

One other thing…I’ve talked a lot about the kinds of resumes that I like to see, but my own resume lists my entire work history, my education, and my special skills. I do make an effort to keep it to three pages. And I have to say, I have gotten good results from my resume.

I really do think that the bottom line is the work and educational history that you have worked to assemble, rather than some gimmicky method of presentation.

yes, thank you!!

I’m glad you’ve said this, wren. It is reassuring to know your work history doesn’t have to be pared down to one or two pages, that all things are considered. I’ve spent the weekend drafting all the places I’ve worked and volunteered, and I’d like to have a full resume of everything I’ve done. If I have to make a shorter one, I will.

Thanks, again, wren. :)
