Volunteer at least twice a month (read all 3 entries…)
Going on six months....

This summer I volunteered for Habitat for Humanity two times a month building some townhouses in the Seattle area. My winter volunteer position is with Children’s Hospital. I can’t even describe how freakin cool it is. Some of my friends wonder how I can sit with sick kids and not get depressed. All I can say is these kids have amazing attitudes and spirit, and it’s hard to be depressed, especially when they aren’t. They’re fighters! With great attitudes. Yesterday I sat with a 9 year-old cancer patient and we built a 3-D construction paper farm with animals, mud pits, pastures, hay, and a barn. The time flies by when I’m there. I liked Habitat, but Children’s is where it’s at for me. I’m there four times a month at this point, but I can see doing more in the future, especially with my flexible schedule. All I can say is volunteering helps keep me grounded, and life in perspective. I’ve come to the point where I don’t like to talk too much about it. It’s hard to articulate, but basically I don’t want it to become something where people think I’m a “better” person for doing it, or that it earns me something. I’ve learned alot from doing it, and doing it is reward and thanks enough.

Hi

I am new to volunteering, and I ran into your story just by doing a search on google, and it’s nice to know that there are people like you out there. I have a question, where do I sign up to do what you do with kids. I want to be able to put a smile on their faces through such a trying period in their life. If you can help, it would be grateful. Please e-mail me with any information. tuan.c.win@gmail.com.

Thank You kindly
