Grow my hair out (read all 5 entries…)
New Routine

My hair is extremely curly and currently about half-way down my back. My goal is to get it all the way down my back so it’s about to waist level.

Because it’s so curly, I had been using heat every day – either a blow-dryer when I wore it curly or a flat-iron when I wore it straight. It’s bothered over the years that I use so much heat, but my hair being what it is, I did’t know what else to do about it.

Well… About six weeks ago, I stubmled across a website that gave a method of dealing with curly hair witout using heat. (I’ve tried to find the website again so I can paste it here, but to no avail… Sorry.) It’s been over a month since I’ve used heat on my hair, and it certainly is healthier, and I can see some growth starting to take place.

curls

yes, my hair is either ringlets (if i’m very very lucky) or weird cowlicky smooshy waves if i’m unlucky.

a lot of it seems to depend on the haircut… do you have any advice for what to tell the stylist while she is cutting your hair? I have read it is best to ask for lots of layers and also uneven layers.

I think a lot of stylists don’t understand that curly hair is different from straight hair and has to be cut to shape it.

I have to use product on it too, I bought a silicone gel, and also a curl enhancer, which help bring out the ringlets.

I don’t even own a blowdryer, I am concerned about it damaging my hair (it used to be long but I have since been keeping it short)

I think long curly hair would be gorgeous though… I think sometimes about growing mine out again especially if I could get the stylist to cut it correctly with a lot of layers to enhance the curl.

Good luck with yours.

Do you use product?

How do you describe what type of haircut you want? (I realize you are growing it out at the moment)

haircut

Prepare yourself, because this is the part where people’s eyes usually glaze over…

I don’t know what type of haircut to recommend because I’ve never had one.

Now, I know this makes no sense to most people, and the question I usually get is: Then why isn’t your hair to your feet?! In response: I honestly don’t know.

I can definitely see how stylists could have a hard time with curly hair, and I wonder if you’ve ever happened across Ouidad? She’s a stylist and salon owner who specializes in curly hair, and she gives tips on cutting curly hair in order to preserve the shape of the ringlets the way they’re supposed to be. Here’s a link to her website:

You asked about product – I currently use LA Looks gel (I know, not the best stuff out there) because I had a bottle of it from before and want to use up what I have before spending money on more hair products. I use a natural sulate-free shampoo (can’t remember the name of it off-hand) and Infusium conditioner. After washing, I use Infusium23 leave in conditioner, my LA Looks gel, and an alcohol-free hairspray.

As I run out of products, I’m trying to replace them with higher quality more eco-friendly and hair-friendly options.

no haircut

wow never had a haircut… your hair must be way way curlier than mine.

I have heard of ouidad, I wish i could afford a haircut from someone like her, i usually just get cheap haircuts.

I think we are lucky to have hair with “personality” even if it is more work.
