No more waiting for unreasonably late people.
I made a promise to myself

about a year ago that I would not wait anymore for someone who was unreasonably late. I don’t mean 5, 10, 15 minutes. I can even sometimes handle 20-30 if it’s not habitual and we’re not trying to catch a plane. But some people are late by 1 or 2 hours. That is just rude. Unless you are driving from very, very far away and ran into traffic or something, that is very disrespectful of another’s time, in my opinion.

So from now on, I am renewing my promise to myself. If there is a time that is agreed upon, I will wait no more than 15 minutes. Then I am leaving without you, or we will reschedule, or whatever. But I am not wasting my time waiting around for people.

No,

Early dinner guest are worse! Then you’re torn between going ahead with preparations and entertaining someone.

Yes!

I agree. For business meetings, be early. But for dinner, I think being up to 10 minutes late is OK, but no more than that. Early arrivals throw a monkey wrench into preparations, just as you said.

I was over 30 minutes late to a dinner yesterday! It was in a city about 25 miles away, and usually takes about 40 minutes to get there, but we ran into very bad traffic – lots of stopping on the highway and then going no more than 30 mph when it would start rolling again. So instead of 40 minutes it took us over an hour. I felt bad, but our host was very gracious about it…
