This summer Isak participated in the library’s Summer Reading Club, hungrily devouring his daily books. Yesterday we had perfect weather for the greatly anticipated medal ceremony. It was held outside at the Metrotown branch and had arts & crafts, giant balls, hula hoops, bubbles, face painting, chalk, parachutes etc. for the kids, live music, pancakes and coffee, mounties, the mayor, distinguished librarians and other literary poohbahs.
At 11:00, a jillion kids (well, probably over 500, with their families) lined up all around the place to go up and receive their medals. We waited to see how fast the enormous line would go (frankly we planned to go to the event itself but then pick up the actual medal later at the local library rather than wait hours in line), but they had a well flowing system that moved quickly, so we went up with all the others.
It’s a lovely medal, and he’s quite proud—I’m glad we stayed, and I’m doubly glad we’re raising kids with such a love of books! This is definitely something to continue in the summers to come.
