Cider is an awesome beast. American cider is mostly swill, overfiltered artificially sweetened garbage no better than alcopops. Canadian (Quebecois) cider is strong, sweet, tannic and uncarbonated, more like wine. English cider is very good, nice and funky with earthy notes and a rich body. French (normandy) cider is my favorite, some resembling a bubbly champagne that’s strong with the fruity notes. Dupont cidre from france is worth seeking out.
When I was 20, I had an epiphany to try new exotic beers. I was sick of all the middle-of-the-road ales of the microbrew revolution. I started to buy up obscure domestic and imported beers and taking notes on each one as I drank them. I eventually found www.ratebeer.com, a nice place to store my “ratings”. Combine this hobby with a love of traveling, homebrewing and an urge to understand all things fermented, and you make a recipe for someone like me. You can check out my profile on ratebeer if you’d like: http://www.ratebeer.com/View-User-6337.htm
Of all the hobbies in the world, I haven’t found a better one. It enriches you to travel, hunt for new [beers], meet new people and try new things. I think everyone should be very passionate about something. So many people are dull, uninspired and just coast through life without a spark.
My favorite discovery? Hmmm. I’d say it was when I learned how diverse beer could be. From a thick imperial stout to a sharp and sour lambic gueuze, beer is a varied creature that most people falsely assume is strictly a fizzy yellow glass of mostly water.
Of all the beers I’ve had, Belgium is still my favorite.
... for a response. i’d like to tour each country mentioned for what they offer.
