As a northeastern boy most of my life, I’ve hiked lots of sections of the Appalachian Trail, but I’d like to work on completing the whole thing.

my one experience on the AT...
A couple of years ago my dad and I were driving around in NC and decided to head west a little ways to where the AT passes through Tennessee. We grabbed our day packs and hadn’t hiked 10 minutes when the trail crossed a small back road where someone had apparently dumped a dozen or so bags of trash. They must have been out there for some time, since they were torn open and scattered about quite a bit. So we spent the next two and half hours or so picking up trash, which was strangely more fulfilling than if we had actually hiked the trail. So I guess I’ve hiked about a quarter mile of the AT. :)
Yeah, that makes a _lot_ of sense!
I’ve had similar experiences of being out hiking and coming across the trash that people have dumped … way out on a trail somewhere! And we’re not talking about the wrappers of the sandwiches they brought with them for the hike; no, like Will, we’re talking about bags full of trash! Now help me understand this: Someone decides to bag his trash—and then, instead of leaving it for the trash collectors at his home or workplace, instead of taking it to a dump, instead of leaving it in the inevitable trash bin at the trailhead, he goes to the effort of carrying it along the trail some distance, and only then dumping it! This makes no sense to me. It’s not just dumb, it’s perverse. Yet Will’s encounter, sadly, isn’t that unusual. Sheesh. Good job, though, Will!
