Here’s another task that should be labelled “Not Sure.” I’m sure becoming a doctor is the perfect fit for many people; it just wasn’t for me.
It’s a hard road, and maybe I shouldn’t be able to say I’ve done it. Have my MD but didn’t go through residency.
Noticed during my medical training that my heart wasn’t in it. Loved the patient contact. Enjoyed the one or two step deductive process. But didn’t like the lack of creativity, the seemingly growing administrative drudgery, and the rigid hours. I was in a MD/PhD program and was looking more towards combining research and practice, but realized I’m not disciplined enough to combine both and still have time for life. I should have paid more attention to the buzz I got from programming and various comp sci courses, even when I was working through pre-med and med courses.
Times I automatically gravitated towards the NEJM out of genuine interest: 1.
Times I automatically searched for computer science journals or articles: uncountable.
But if I hadn’t tried it, I’d have seen some cool episode of ER and wondered… :)
