avoid hydrogenated oils (read all 2 entries…)
Hydrogenated oils are hurting people 3 years ago

The attached article explains why hydrogenated oils are poison for us. Please read it. Hydrogenated oils are artificially produced. They do NOT exist in nature. And they are making us sick. These oils exist for two reasons: 1) they make food able to sit on a shelf longer, and 2) they add a “guminess” sensation to food which makes it taste more appealing. Bottom-line benefit: profits, but at the expense of the health of people.

This topic makes me so insane. I hear everyone around me brag about how they aren’t eating this and they aren’t eating that, no but they are eating food with hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup. It’s astounding how many products contain one or both of these products. I still get weak and have a bag of cheetos now and then. I’m hoping to over come this. I stopped eating fast food so there is hope for me yet.

Carla, I hear you. For example, beware of “Healthy Choice” foods—they have the hydrogenated oils in them (and possibly HFCS, not sure). Do you have Wild Oats or Whole Foods Markets? They are my savior shopping places. I’m also trying to buy more fresh vegetables and fruit from local farmer’s markets. (I stopped eating meat, also, and that automatically removed fast food, which I miss sometimes but am surviving without!!) Take care and thanks for writing.

Yes we have Whole Foods & another store called Chamberlins. I am starting to frequent them more. Once I complete my ‘43 things’ thing of being out of debt in Oct, I intend to shop there exclusively. And there is a farmers market here on the weekends that I need to get out and take advantage of. It’s so easy to swing by the regular corner market and spend literally half on various items. But as my husband says “you pay it now or you pay it on your hospital bill down the road.” Thanks for the inspiration to do the right thing for my health. :-)

Thank you, too, Carla. It helps to have conversations about the things we want to do… helps keep the thinking alive in each of us!

One thing I’m also trying to do is to eat more organic foods. They definitely cost more—a gallon organic milk costs $5.50 vs. $2.50 (I think). But like your husband’s comment about paying now or paying later, I justify the added cost the same way.

oh my

I’m reading the article and am realising that my stomach is probably a chockful of hydrogenated oil right now!

Thanks for sharing the article, though. I’m learning a lot. :)
