learn baby sign language (read all 2 entries…)
I've taken... 3 years ago

ASL I and II a couple times and through my work as a relay operator (C.A.) I fell in love with the Deaf Community. But I especially love the idea of baby sign language. For hearing and non hearing children, giving them a leg up to communicate before they can grasp spoken language is a great advantage. I’ll definitely do this if/when I have a child. Could even be just a great skill to add to the tool belt I’ve been been filling as I travel on my journey.

Comments:

I'm not sure about this

My friend and his wife taught their first child sign language, and I wasn’t really encouraged by the results. He picked the signs up quickly, but then he took to spoken language extremely slowly, perhaps wanting to stick to signing. And he started having behavior problems because he couldn’t communicate. In the end he went to special speech classes and caught up, but I can’t help thinking that he might have been better off had he not been taught sign language at all.

My Understanding

is that it’s meant to be a bridge that helps cover the gap when a child knows what he/she wants but doesn’t have the verbal skills to be able to ask in the conventional way. Even children that have never been taught baby sign language often use gesture and pointing etc. to convey their intent before they can speak. I’m sure there are some children that prefer signing to speaking, but I do think that children can be taught both forms of language skills in tandem and that baby sign language can be a positive tool. Obviously, parents need to make their own informed decisions and find the path that works best for them and best meets the needs of their particular circumstances.
