first you need to decide which you want, even if you can’t afford if yet. go to a dealership and test drive a lot..don’t be intimidated by dealers..they’re just bobbleheads.
display a pic of car you want (preferably framed nicely,... presentation is everything), and it will remind you of your goal everyday…you will get there waaaay sooner than you think

I searched for it for a couple of months, told all of my friends and family what I was looking for… and my brother found it for me! A snow white volkswagon new beetle with a diesel engine. I am about to attempt the switch over to biodiesel. The car is so cool. I am overjoyed when I get a chance to drive it… and it has been 3 weeks already. Plus my insurance is cheaper, it uses less gas for more miles, takes up less space in the parking lot and driveway, and is as cute as… well, a bug!
