Buster Benson I need more goals.

I have written 5 or 6 songs that I like.

I wrote them using Daniel’s help and the awesome GarageBand app for the Mac. Only problem is that because each of the tracks can be recorded separately, I never had to play guitar and sing at the same time. This is embarrassing when people come over and see a guitar in its stand and I can’t play anything. I want to learn the “unplugged” version of my songs, and be able to play and sing at the same time. Sure, it’s still going to suck but at least it will suck in a slightly more fun way.

Buster Benson I need more goals.

I think it takes a special gene or something. That’s the only possibility left, considering how much effort I put into this. My friend just started learning the guitar a couple weeks ago and already she can sing and play at the same time. Not fair!

What kind of songs did you try to learn?

yeah, my little cousins picked up a guitar and started rocking out within weeks.

my latest attempt was damien rice’s ‘delicate’ last summer. (failed)

i do wish you the best of luck. of course, if you fail on your quest, you can just have your genius friend play and sing for you :)

Not genetic

I don’t hold with the theory that some people are born musical and others aren’t.

And if you can play guitar with both hands at the same time then you’re already more than halfway towards being able to sing and play together. It might be better to start off with a song which you compose while singing and playing rather than through the multitrack system, and then come back to those other 5 later.

relax, let your guitar playing breathe

Your guitar doesn’t have to be going all the time. Imagine you’re dancinfg with it as you sing. Fill in some empty places, leave some others empty. Trust your hands and your motor memory, sometimes a good chunk-a chunk-a is all you need.
