Two weeks in Germany - 1 3 years ago

South of Frankfurt (the airport I flew into and out of) I visited friends in and near Karlsruhe and Bruchsal, and made a day-trip to Idar-Oberstein.

North of Frankfurt, my itinerary went through (listing major cities only): Koeln (Cologne), Oberhausen and Bochum (in the Ruhr region), Goettingen (at the edge of the Harz Mountains), the beautiful and historic town of Hildesheim (between Goettingen and Hamburg), Hamburg (in the north), Sankt Peter-Ording (on the North Sea coast), and an overnight stop in Muenster (North Rhine-Westphalia) on the way back to Frankfurt. Again, I was fortunate to meet with wonderful friends, both old and new, and to enjoy seeing a wide variety of sights. I especially won’t forget the time spent playing boardgames, or seeing Beauty and the Beast in Oberhausen and The Lion King in Hamburg.

(I was mostly able to avoid World Cup fever, although once there was a long slow traffic jam resulting from people headed toward a game being played in another city, and on another occasion the game was on tv as background to our conversations.)

You had a wonderful time. I would love one day to go to Germany. I think DarkDog lives in Germany. It would be cool to visit him. I miss home. Hope he’s back from his vacation soon.

hallo misprint!

Yes, I was in Deutschland: I have vacationed there every summer beginning in 1998, spending at least two weeks each time (however, I’ve never been to Mainz—perhaps a new goal there!).

I visited so many places in order to meet up with two dozen friends (that’s counting only the grownups!),—and we had a great time even though it was a lot of driving and the weather was (atypically) quite hot.

Visiting other countries from Germany has become fairly easy with the advent of the Irish flight service “RyanAir.” I fly into and out of Frankfurt Flughafen for the journey to and from the States; then I travel from the regional airports (Hahn, Baden-Baden) used by the smaller carrier for the short flights to, and weeklong visits in, (so far) Austria, France, and Spain.

It really was a wonderful holiday! (I know that I am very fortunate.) smile

RyanAir

Morocco? Cool!

If I may ask, to what cool places did RyanAir take you on your last two vacations?

Mainz

I have been there, just passing through. I went on a cruise along the Rhine which I think started there. The cruise was great, but I honestly can’t remember much about Mainz.
