backpack through Europe
Best experience of my life!

And you don’t even need a lot of money to do it. Just save up, as I did, and do some planning. I studied abroad so that helped a lot because I was already there. I spent aprox. 2 months there, visiting France, Italy, Switzerland, England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland. And youth hostels are the cheapest and best way to travel on a budget.

I leave for Europe on Sept 2 - any advice?

I have a little under two months to plan my trip and I am looking for all the advice I can get. I’m traveling alone, unless someone cares to join up. I already have my EuroPass (5 trips within two months). I plan on getting there on Sept 3 and returning on Sept 11 (I know it is short but it is all I can afford to take off from work at this point). Anyway, this is my first trip by myself and I am very excited about it. Please enlighten me with money saving, fun packed suggestions so I can optimize my “joy factor” :)

Thanks…Brad

Hi Brad,

If you can, get a travel book, I recommmend Lonely Planet, it’s catered to budget travelers. Rick Steves is also good, though more so for sights and other travel tips and less for budget accommodations. Also make sure you book lodging ahead of time, whether it be hostels or hotels. The internet is a good way to do this. Invest in a money belt (there are so many pick pockets in Europe). Which countries are you going to?

Thanks for the tip :)

Hey MissCarpeDiem (nice name btw), thank you for the
advice I need all I can get. I’m so excited! Well, I’m
landing in London on the 3rd and I planned on heading
to Ireland the following day (I bought one of those
Europasses for 5 trips and they do not need to be
consecutive) then I have the Netherlands, Germany,
Switzerland, and France as places that my pass will
take me to. Do you know how much I should plan for
shelter vs. food and essentials? Thanks in advance for
your reply…Brad

Thanks! Well shelter should be top priority. Food and essentials you can get pretty easily without planning in advance. Book at least a day in advance if you can. Usually you can find the number online or in your guidebook and you should call them to see if there are any vacancies. Calling is usually good because you can reach someone and book right then and there.

Things to bring and the EuroPass

MissCarpeDiem,
Thank you again for your responses. Do you have a laundry list of things to back for a 10 day trip? I plan on only having a backpack so the bare necessities is critical. Also, I purchased the EuroPass (five countries over 2 months – non consecutive days) and I’m wondering if each time I pass into a country if that counts towards my five trips (even if I’ve already visited that country). My EuroPass question will impact my plans for travel. I land in London and I can visit Ireland, France, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. I’m wondering how to setup the travel because I’m not sure if everytime I pass a countries boundaries if I use up another of my five trips? Thanks again…Brad

MissCarpeDiem has gotten 2 cheers on this entry.
