I managed to complete this task based on being able to save some money over time (stored it in my savings not my checking so it would be out of the main cash flow, kinda psychological), and hitting on a deal at a local computer megastore (Fry’s). Many big-box computer stores have one cheap model at any given time that is decent. I managed to secure a refurbished Compaq laptop with fairly decent specs for $600. (I’d been holding out for a laptop, and glad I did.) Desktops of course are cheaper. Also, I recommend finding the most computer-geeky store available; in other words not Best Buy unless that’s all you have. Check circulars for deals, and try to get to them early (for example Fry’s tends to sell out of their advertised deals very quickly).
