see a psychic
Worth doing, but be careful 3 years ago

If you go to see a psychic, you want to make sure you go to someone reputable, not a con artist. I’ve known a number of psychics over the years-my mother ran a metaphysical (a.k.a. “new age”) shop for many years-and almost all the ones I’ve met have been legit.

My advice to you would be to get recommendations from people who have already been to see a psychic. Generally speaking, if there’s a metaphysical shop having a card reader or psychic doing short readings there, the person will probably be legit; most people who run these kind of shops don’t want to have scam artists working there because it’s bad for business. It’s also a pretty “safe” intro, becaue it’ll probably be a 15- to 30-minute session, and you’ll get a good idea where the psychic is at. Listen to your intuition, too. The spiritualist church in my area also hosts “psychic fairs,” and most of the people who read there are pretty good—although there is one crazy b*tch who shows up there regularly, but most people avoid her.

A good and legitimate psychic will not:
  • Tell you that your life is in danger or that you have “a lot of negative energy around you” (which they can “clear” if you give them money for a “special treatment” or talisman);
  • Be found at a 900 number (Sorry, Miss Cleo);
  • Be abusive or controlling; or
  • Ask for sexual favors or any personally identifying information (such as social security number, etc).

Most legitimate psychics view themselves as counselors on some level, and as such, they subscribe to a code of ethics very similar to professionals in the counseling fields. You should expect the same degree of ethical behavior from a good psychic as you would from a good psychologist.
