I decided I have got to start some where on this one….so I bought two different DVDs on “Yoga” today, in hopes that it will kick start me on this one…now all I have to do, is make the time to find a quiet corner all to myself, (and try not to LMAO while doing it , try for once to take myself at very least some what seriously), and hope that not only do I not hurt myself..but that I get some enjoyment out of it!! ;)

Flex your laughing muscles
I dare you not to laugh when they ask you to lick your forehead. Okay, they may not do that on your DVD but they did on mine. Well pretty much, I was instructed to lick the tip of my finger and place it on the center of my forehead. That was the one on meditation though, I have to keep at this video to experience the meditative quality. What kind of Yoga DVD’s did you get? This also takes me back to a time when I brought some Yoga video’s over to your place, remember? Oh and I am sooo not flexible, it’s sad really.
Laugh if you want to!
Hey, laugh all you want! There are certainly enough things in life that we MUST do that aren’t any fun at all, so why not enjoy the things that we are volunteering to do?
I always used to try and say something silly to my classes to try and make everyone feel comfortable (well, full disclosure: I can hardly ever be serious, so it’s not like I planned it that way). Have fun!
It sounds like you’re a silly, happy person anyway. Yoga tends to integrate everything you already are and bring it all to the surface – how can you deny that laughing part of you? The world needs more laughing!
Phew!...
Well it’s good to know it’s “OK” to “let out the laughter” in such a situation as this, as the first and last time I tryed this years ago , I could not shut up !!(mind you I was at home with a good buddy of mine with whom we have a tendency to get a bit “Giddy” at times…) But I am the Reining “Queen Of Klutz”...no really, I even have the crown to prove it !!! And generally speaking , if someone is going to do something stupid… well lets just say I usually fill the “Job” just fine all on my own…so the whole “Get Bent” thing should be interesting….I appreciate the advice as well as encouragement , especially since you are a “Expert” in this field, I admire you for going out there and doing what makes you happy , while at the same time helping others find a similar path as well, and keeping a sense of humour close at hand, I love that ! Ever have anything “strange or funny” happen in any of your past classes with beginners such as myself?
wish I could oblige!
Really, beginners are the BEST to have in class. They’re so nervous at first, but when they find out that absolutely nothing is expected of them, they are so greatly relieved! It always turns out to be more strenuous than they expected and more relaxing at the same time. My favorite is when they have that amazed “DAMN I feel better!” look on their faces, because that’s what made me fall in love with yoga way back when!
It’s easy to tell in class who’s a beginner, an intermediate, and an advanced student, and it’s probably not what you’d think. Beginners listen carefully and try to follow along very closely, and probably get the most out of it. Intermediates like to show off what they know and tend to go deeper into poses than they need to – it annoys me when they predict what I’m going to say and race into the next pose, when I see that I always go to a different pose just to be ornery! (Evil teacher!)
To me, an advanced student knows their body and understands how to work with it. They know how to challenge themselves, but they’re not embarrassed to take a break when they want to. They get my utmost respect when they can respect their limitations over their ego. Shoot, everybody has their own issues and nobody has the right to judge your poses, not even me. You might have a bad knee or a slipped disc or a full belly or a broken heart, you just gotta do the yoga that’s right for you!
Boy did I digress! Sorry about that! I guess I laugh at myself a lot in class (I can’t tell my left from my right, for example) but I honestly think my students are so great, I can’t recall any embarrassing moments they’ve had. If anything borderline goofy happens, I get really concerned they’ll feel stupid so I try really hard to let them know it’s all part of the process. Farts are a big one – EVERYONE farts in class at some point! It’s not possible to contain it!
OMG!!!lol...
Jean, you must be in some “Kick-Ass” shape gurl!!! I just tryed out my yoga tape last night , ( one hour of it), and I woke this morning feeling like very small “Evil Gnomes” had been hitting me with hammers all night long!!!( little bastards anyway), I had no idea that it would require as much strength as it did…knew you would have to be bendy to get some of the poses, but didnt realize how much endurance came into it ! I started laughing at the start picturing you teaching your class full of “Farting Folks!” You sound like a great teacher who knows how to put the class at ease with a good mixture of humour and understanding, I wish I was close enough to enroll in one of your classes! How is your new studio going anyway? Loads to do I imagine at the beginning. Well I should go soak me sore muscles…perhaps I will start with “Yoga For Babies ” next time , in the hopes it would be a bit more my level….
Way to go girl!!!
Woohoo!!!!
You started. That’s the hard part. Wait a day and do it again.
And now that you know how hard it is to do, just take it easy. It’ll take a few months before anything really happens. Instead concentrate on only one thing. But I’m not gonna tell you what that one thing is. Just kidding. Focus on getting into the habit of exercising, cuz most people blow it at week 3. Focus on MWF at 4pm or whatever. Spend your half hour or hour on it.
Some days I just lay there. I’d lift one finger (not always that one) while watching this perfect form doing yoga in perfect form on my dvd. Now I am to the point where exercise is always part of my week, no pattern to it, no specific type of exercise. It’s just always there.
Focus on the schedule. Once you have the habit, it becomes part of you. And then you get fit.
You rock!!
Yeah, right...
I have at least one yoga DVD. When I first got it, I would stop, look at the instructor and say “Yeah, right” with all the sarcasm I could muster. Well, after a couple of years now, I find that I can do most of them if I keep doing it. Yet, I don’t cuz I have the attention span of a gnat, so I do other things as well, like play soccer, track – 100m & 200m (typical male, all sprint, no endurance), walking, playing tag with the kids, cycling, and my mostest favorite of all is Tai Chi. I find it simply amazing and it keeps me fit for everything else.
Good luck. Doesn’t matter what you do, just do it.
Hmm
not sure exactly what a “Gnat” is , but perhaps I am related to it, as I have the attention span of one by the sounds of it…would love to try this whole Tai Chi thing , always looks so beautiful to me when I see people doing this, though I am certain I would find a why to foul that up real fast , like simply falling over for no real reason other than complete and utter lack of grace perhaps…I agree with you though, on the fact that it really doesnt matter what it is your doing, as long as you are doing something , and you are enjoying , while doing it! BTW, how did you found yourself doing Tai Chi?
Well...
I’ve been trying to find a martial art that suits me since I was in high school…blah, blah, blah….then I took a Tai Chi course. And I am going on 5 years now. Try a local college or rec centre or the ‘Y’. (Send me a message and tell me where you are and I’ll see if I can find you some place.) Avoid Taoist Tai Chi – it seems to be a painful rendition of Yang style. Yang, Wu and Chen are beautiful.
Don’t worry about falling over. As far as I know, I’m the only one in Canada who has ever done that: I just wasn’t paying attention that day.
‘Gnat’ is a specific type of flying insect, but has been generalized to mean a small fly. ‘G’ is silent.
thanks for the explanation
I would like to try this one day, but first I am going to make myself sit down, ( or stand up, which ever is required…) and do my Yoga tapes I bought..but have yet to open…have got to remind myself ONE thing at a time…always seem to be flitting from one thing to the next….it’s that bloody “Gnat” DNA in me I think…flying about from one thing to the next…to which I should be doing right now…gotta fly!
