stop swearing (read all 2 entries…)

My office environment promotes swearing, and I pick up on it by osmosis.

Swear Jars work.

Starting today, every time I catch myself using a curse word, into the jar goes a buck. At the end of the week, I’ll donate whatever money is in the jar to a good cause. (After counting the money to get an idea of what sort of frequency I’m at.)

worthwhile objective

I appreciate and applaud anyone trying to break this habit. I always humiliate myself when I get in a foul mood, and start swearing. When I hear the words coming from someone else’s mouth, I realize how disgusting and stupid they sound. Good luck in your endeavor!

I figure there’s a time and a place for everything, but I’ve gotten to the point where I tend to sound ignorant or rude, if I’m not very careful.

Thank you for your good wishes!

my chorus teacher used to do this

She would collect quarters from students (and other teachers!) who cursed in her presence. At the end of the year, she took the chorus officers out to lunch on the money she’d collected and proceeded to pay the waiter directly from the teeming jar of coins. Luckily the waiter was a fellow chorus member and saw it coming…

I think it’s a great goal. I don’t have a problem with using strong language, it’s important to use it consciously and deliberately and in appropriate situations.

I agree. I’ve found that I’m not using strong language as often again, and that when I do use it, it has more strength.
