read Shakespeare

Model for good writing?  — 2 years ago

It seems to me that good novel writing is very similar to Shakespeare. The novels I really love are driven by dialogue, with little exposition or descriptions. If I write a book (and I want to), I think I want to take Shakespeare’s approach (and Sophocles et alia) and write in almost entirely dialogue format. Harder to do, probably, but a better result I think.

Which is why I want to read Shakespeare. To understand how he drives a story by only dialogue (and some minor stage directions).

Yes but

See Shakespeare too. Actors bring these words to life in unexpected ways… not just in how they say them, but in how they move. Shakespeare is great words, wonderful poetry, but Shakespeare is also movement and extremely visual. There is free Shakespeare all over the country.

Visual Shakespeare

Dramatic productions of Shakespeare add a lot to the plays of course (being originally written for the stage). But I am more of a reader than a watcher of plays. I’ve seen a number of productions of Shakespeare’s works, but they lack the punch of reading the plays, and lingering over the words and the phrases.

This is a personal predeliction, and should not be taken to mean that I think that dramatic renditions are worthless. Merely that I prefer the one over the other. Same with Sophocles, Aeschylus, et alia.
