get some 'girl tests' done (read all 2 entries…)
In the spirit of looking after myself... 3 years ago

I’ve been reading up on the plethora of tests and screens that women are supposed to get done every few years, to make sure you’re not getting cervical cancer or Delayed Onset Exploding Womb Syndrome or what-not. I’ve never had any of them done. Time to do something about that.

cheers if I had them!

Although I can only think of one test right now… and yeah, well worth having done, just to be able to put the “I really should…” out of your mind!

Exactly

By all accounts it’s quite unpleasant, but how bad would you kick yourself if you ended up suffering from something that would have been preventable?!

it wasn't that bad

Certainly nowhere near as vile as I’d been expecting. More embarrassing than anything.

Thanks!

At least it’s good to know it’s not a big ordeal :o)

Heehee,

Definitely get tested for Delayed Onset Exploding Womb Syndrome, there were 6 confirmed cases in the last year alone!

::clutches mid-section anxiously::

LOL… I was wondering if anyone even realised I’d made that up – after all, there’s a real live Exploding Head Syndrome, so why not? :-p

Okay - I'm checking up on you!

Have you had any girl tests done yet?

You really should you know!

Tomorrow I’m going for a colposcopy (apparently they’re gonna stick a microscope up my girlie bits to check out the dodgy cells that were on my pap smear!) so I’m feeling all soap boxy! It will most likely all be fine, and if it isn’t, at least I have found out early and have more options. (that sounds very dramatic – I really don’t think I’ll have a problem!!)

So…

If you have had it done, excellent, great work – A++ for you!

If you haven’t... well, it’s a good thing you’re in Dublin my girl or I’d be dragging your butt to a doctor myself!

::hangs head::

No, I haven’t. Partly cos I’m nervous, partly cos I can’t really afford it, partly cos every time I think of it it’s the wrong time of the month – apparently it has to be done mid-cycle. But they’re all excuses really. I know it has to be done.

You have to pay for it?

That’s appalling, I thought you had an NHS type setup. Surely there must be somewhere you can get it free. I can’t get my head around non-free healthcare. However, while money’s a reasonable excuse, the time-of-the-month thingy just isn’t. How about ringing and making an appointment in advance for when it will be the right time? If you can’t make an appointment and it’s a drop-in thingy, set yourself up a reminder on one of those online reminder email websites to go off when you’re mid-cycle. Just do it. It’s better to know than to not know.

There might be a way to get it free

but if there is, it would involve taking time off work, going to a public GUM clinic full of junkies, waiting for hours (they warn you to expect a four-hour wait, and someone once told me he waited eight hours) and then waiting six to eight weeks for the results. I’d rather pay to have it done privately, even if it means I’ll spend the rest of that month living on bread and water :-p

Last time I was at the clinic I did ask to make an appointment for the right time, but they said you could only make appointments up to two weeks in advance. It’s already too late to do it this month, but I’ve just put a reminder in my phone to book it next month.

I’ve been for the routine girl-test experience

and it was full of normal people, albeit all avoiding eye contact, looking a bit shifty and “It’s only thrush, I’m not a slag, honest!”, which is ridiculous really cos there’s nowt to be ashamed of. Still, your healthcare system seems a bit different from ours so maybe your GUM clinics are, let’s say, differently populated. I think it’s shocking that you should have to face a four-hour wait and then six weeks on top of that if you want it free. I was in and out in less than an hour and got the all clear one week later.

Ok.. lecture time!

Right, firstly, I don’t know if things are different there to here in Australia, but a pap smear (which is really the most important test to start with I think) is done by your GP just in a normal doctor visit – you don’t pay any more for it… just the usual fee for a consultation. Is it different in Dublin? Have you asked?? Will you please ask???

Secondly, as long as you’re not menstruating, it should be fine! My doctor didn’t tell me it had to be done at any particular part of the cycle. (other girlie tests are different I know!)

Thirdly, nerves suck – I know… I was REALLY nervous today… but I got through it with humour.. told the gyno that it wasn’t actually my vagina, I was just bringing it in for a friend! Made her laugh, made me relax and that was that.

It’s SO important evenstar – please check out your options… and any other woman who is reading this thinking “Gee, I’m overdue/ haven’t had my pap smear…”

Make an appointment NOW!!!

EDIT: oops – just read the entries above from you and Abs… obviously it IS different there! Sorry! Still, as much as it sucks to have to pay for it, you should do it! Wish I lived around the corner so I could cook you meals that month and help you out!!

I will, I promise.

That’s a good ice-breaking line – I might have to steal it :o)

Go right ahead!

I stole it from my Aunty!! It was actually quite a funny visit today – she had a great sense of humour… and I make jokes when I’m nervous!

Now – you know I’ll check back on you to make sure you follow through! (Even though you could lie and tell me you’ve been even if you haven’t!! But I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t do that!!)

:-)

Synchronicity

How strange that you should mention this now – believe it or not, I got them done at lunchtime today. I wasn’t going to post anything about it until I get the results back, but I’m really glad you posted this – I’d been wishing I had someone to talk to about it, even if just to say “it was nasty but I went through with it and now I feel weird but proud of myself!” :o) Thank you for thinking of me – I’m glad not to have to say I’m still putting it off.
