Learn how to paint with oil paints (read all 4 entries…)

(Too bad my goal isn’t sculpture—with that title)
Anyway, I completed my First-time Painter Class this past Sunday. We worked with acyrilics in the class so no oils for me yet. I am considering taking a basic drawing class before moving on to oils maybe with the fall schedule. In the meantime I bought a couple of drawing books, because… heheh … I try to find a book for everything that interests me.

Comments:

Good start!

I too learned first with acrylics and then moved onto oils. The two are very different to work with. I found the drying-time the big difference. With acrylics you just let it dry and paint over it, add a layer, whatever. Oils… not so fast, as everything will smudge and bleed and turn greenish brown!! Using Liquin, a product by Windsor&Newton, is great to speed the drying time of oils.

Anyway – just wanted to cheer you on! Painting is so great – keep up the drawing and practising… it is a learned thing after all!

Thanks! I forgot how much I used to like to draw as a child, so this goal has been good for me. will be better once my inner perfectionist quiets down some!

oeuvre d'art

you are leaving me hanging. what happened? did you create your masterpiece? oil painting is intimidating, i just tried it last night. . . this form of self-expression definitely does not come naturally ;-)

i like acrylics better than oils

acrylics are a much more forgiving medium, cuz they dry so fast. Make a mistake in oil and you could end up waiting days for it to dry.

Oh! I just read gottabekd’s comment about this entry, and she said basically the same thing. ha!

What sort of drawing are you interested in? The figure? faces? objects? cartoons?
