watch Tomes & Talismans, which I haven't seen in 20 yrs
Untitled 2 years ago

This awesome library instructional video series featured a team of kids in a post-apocalyptic world (where books are OUTLAWED!) who are trying to find all the old libraries/bookmobiles so they can get enough info to rejuvenate society. It had the eeriest theme song. The kids wore fun Trekkie-type outfits and 80s winged haircuts. They did things like break into eerie abandoned bookmobiles and use the card catalog to find books on, I don’t know, water purification, or democracy, or something. Meanwhile these Big-Brotherish bad guys were after them. It has taken me years to find (finally!) the name of this series.

After writing 5 or 6 organizations, I’ve figured out where to buy Tomes and Talismans, and once I save up the $$, I’m going to order it and watch all 13 episodes.

Oh. My. God. No. WAY!

I REMEMBER THIS SERIES!!!!!!!!!! They showed it to us in the school library back when I was in second or third grade (yup, that would be about 20 years ago. Dang.) It was INDEED awesome. I think it sparked my life-long interest in libraries and in science fiction (well, that and seeing Back to the Future in the theater).

I have been trying for YEARS to remember the name of it, off and on! Had the “tomes” part, guess I forgot about the “talismans”.

Please, please, please tell me: WHERE did you find it for sale?!! It’s so coincidental that I ran across this entry just now: I just started working on my library science degree, and here I find out that I can actually OWN the series that started it all…

The mind boggles!

YAY! I’m so glad whenever I find anyone who remembers this show! According to an e-mail I received, you can purchase a copy (I think of the whole series???) for $48.00, check or money order if you send a statement requesting a copy of Tomes and Talismans along with your check or money order to: Mississippi Public Broadcasting, Attention: Millard O’Baner, 3825 Ridgewood Road, Jackson, MS 39211.

I got this info from Mississippi Public Broadcasting, after following about a zillion false leads.

Well, I can't thank you enough...

...for doing all that legwork. I don’t have the cash at the moment (going to get some very expensive dental work done, waiting on loans to come through, yada yada, the graduate student’s usual woes), but I am going to send in a check as soon as I do!

Wow. I am STOKED.

Thanks again for connecting me with a treasured piece of my formative years!
