save every Eastern box turtle I can between now and August 31 (read all 4 entries…)
Untitled 3 years ago

Two more saved before I completed the goal. One on August 31, as I was rushing to work-late. But it was cold and raining, and he was doomed by the chill that made him too cold to move. Then yesterday I saved a baby snapping turtle-not an Eastern box turtle but still a worthy species. This was the first snapping turtle I’ve actually seen up close, and they are absolutely prehistoric. Ridges running down the spine and a vicious looking beak, which opened to hiss when I picked the turtle up to reveal a very fleshy pink mouth.

So this goal is going to become a way of life, even though I will mark it as “completed.”

What a lovely goal

Does it give you a warm fuzzy feeling? I know it would to me.

I don’t get that kind of wildlife to save in London.

It definitely does

These creatures are so vulnerable, and it’s a really good feeling to know that-at least for today-this one’s going to live. It’s also been a great goal to share with my daughter. A few times that we’ve turned around to go back for a turtle, one of her friends has been in the car with us. When they inevitably ask, “What are we doing?” my daughter proudly replies “We save turtles!”

I’m amazed at the wildlife in London. My in-laws had a flat in Brompton Park Crescent, which I think is southwest London? They had a fox who regularly came by for a visit.

We have some foxes

And they make the most awful noises in our garden – they sound like strangled babies screaming for mercy. Not at all easy to get to sleep with that racket going on.

It’s even worse when they fight :(

Strangely we have only pigeons in the front of the houses where there are cars, pavement and trees and the road but in the gardens at the back we have a wide range of birds that include pigeons but also many other birds.

A few years ago an owl moved into our part of central London (I had owl poo on my car which is very distinctive). All the pigeons disappeared for 6 months until the owl moved onto another pigeon-infested area! Rich pickings for a bird of prey.

saving turtle, driver gets ticket

If you go to the website for NPR’s Here and Now, on Sept. 14th, 2006 you can listen to the archive for a report on someone getting a ticket for saving a turtle. :( Just thought you’d be interested.

Hope you’re well, vvv!
