I chickened out of joining a class. I was looking forward to it but when the weeks passed by I slowly talked myself out of it. Is there any way of teaching yourself privately first? Any good ways of learning?

Stuff that chicken and roast it!
The best way to learn is in a class, with a good instructor. Even with boundless talent, there is no getting around the need for a solid foundation in the basics. In the long run, that will be one of the key ingredients in your growth and progression as as dancer, besides talent and drive, of course.
And better to get good instruction from the outset than try to do things on your own and inadvertently develop bad habits. (There will be lots of opprtunities to do that anyway!)
Think of the basics in dance like the grammar of it all. Vocabulary has limitations without proper grammar, rules and all.
I hope you will pluck (sorry, I had to say that) up the courage and go take a class. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, that is the only way to learn.
Good luck!
