My spending for week one 3 years ago

I spend all my money on booze and bath products.

I can’t figure out how to sort a Google spreadsheet by numbers. It is really frustrating! Am I going to have to rearrange my category totals every week? Arg.

Sorting by numbers is the same as sorting by letters… just click the Z->A button in the Sort tab. The problem might be that you’re trying to sort on a column that has a lot of frozen rows and different kinds of data in each column. I would move it all to a separate sheet.

I did move my category chart to another sheet and it didn’t work. but my figures are formatted as currency, maybe I need to format them as plain text? I’ll try it later—right now I am totally redoing my spreadsheet so I can track overall category spending as I go. I think I like the process of messing with a spreadsheet better than the actual money tracking. Woo!

One thing it doesn’t do is auto-sort. If you add a new column, you have to re-sort the list to get it in the right order. A bit of a pain. But it does work with currency, and percentages, etc.

Now you know what it’s like to be a software developer. That same enjoyment of messing with spreadsheets is what makes us build websites like crack addicts.

Are you sure? It won’t sort by numbers for me, and I looked it up in the help forum and someone said that function isn’t built into the spreadsheet. How are you doing it?

Yours looks sorted by numbers. Here’s how you can do it:

Go to the category tab
Click the “B” to select the “sub-totals” column. You can click the “C” column instead, that’s what I did at least. I don’t think it would make any difference.
Click on the “Sort” link along the top.
It should say “Sort sheet by Column B”. Click the “Z->A” button.
It should say “Updating” in the corner for a split second, and then sort the column for you.

If that doesn’t work, try resetting things by re-opening the spreadsheet: Open -> Money Tracking. And do the steps again. I just double checked with my spreadsheet and it worked fine…
