leave IT

Not exactly practical  — 1 year ago

I’m probably going to get a Masters in MIS. It’s not what I want to do, but it’s the practical thing to do. I’d really rather be teaching Rhetoric or Philosophy some where, but between our mortgage, Amber’s student loan debt, and two dying cars, getting my warm fuzzy MA simply isn’t practical. Oh well, time to study for the GMAT

Wonder if there's a way to compromise here

Tech is a big field—is there a part of it that you’d feel happier working in?

As for teaching Rhetoric or Philosophy, I know someone who basically does that. He has an MFA in creative writing - it’s a terminal degree - so there’s no need to go for a PhD. On the other hand, high paying or tenure track jobs in academia are hard to come by these days (I know a little about this stuff because my Dad’s a college professor) due to the demographic bulge of the Boomer generation. Then again, they’re about to retire. Maybe things will be different in ten years.

Burned out in IT

I so hear you; I am pretty fried on the whole IT field, but it is hard to make time to switch careers. Plus the thought of starting out on the bottom rung isn’t apealling (or affordable). I wish I had a huge pile of answers, but sadly I don’t. Right now I am looking at switching into computer animation; I have a long road to travel, but it will be worth it when I finally get there. The hardest part will be hanging in there at my current job on the way.
