Summit Mt. Rainier
Build up to it and do it on your own

I would just pitch the “teach a man to fish…” mantra on this. I believe the pursuit of climbing is lifelong and that to really appreciate the mountain, you have to climb it under your own power and expertise. Don’t pay to get someone else to drag you up the mountain. Take classes on smaller mountains, find people to train with and get better with, and then go do this. You will never regret it.

Do you have a recommendation for a class that I would be able to get in to next year? I’ve been looking at the Mountaineer’s basic climbing class, but I’m not a member yet, and I’ve heard it’s hard to get in.

Hey Laurel,

I took the intro course with the Mountaineers about 7 years ago just to meet people when I got to town. It’s a little militaristic but they definitely give you an amazing amount of instruction for the money. It’s pretty tough to beat at the price but it is a major commitment that takes most of a year to get through. If you’re looking for the really deep and quick way to get some experience, I recommend the American Alpine Institute out of Bellingham. I took an advanced alpine ice course with them for a week where I spent $900 or so. I felt that was some of the best money I have ever spent. Our instructor John Tack was really cool and squeezed as much into every day as possible. They also teach week-long basic mountaineering skills courses and you get a lot more individual attention. Here’s a link! Bit more pricey and a bit less social than the season long Mountaineers course but a lot faster and intensive.

Hope that helps! Good luck!
