I use a website to help me learn turkish. Yesterday i went on to use it and was trying to talk to turkish people by writting Turkish. I can get by on turkish but i am by no means fluent in it. One of the people asked me how long i had been here, i replied 6 months he said that my turkish should be better than what it is and i havent progressed. That hurt! so i am even more determined to learn the language now.

Made me feel lots better ..thank you
Thanks for your comment, you are right you can get easily discouraged its easy to do when you have others around you that aernt so patient and understanding. Your story made me laugh!! and its so nice that they try but wish in turn they could undertand that we also try.
Thanks again for your message!
same thing happened to me .. i was in turkey for a bit more than 3 months and when i came back all our turkish friends assumed that I should be fluent by then.. worst of all my husband acted like he knew what it was like because they had all come overseas to learn english.. but i think its harder to go to turkey than to come to speak english because at least they have english channels on tv over there and are somewhat exposed to the western way. i used to do these great lessons online with online turkish learning centre.. but their website seems to be down now.. if it comes back up i’ll send you the link.. also if i buy pimsleur turkish lessons i can send you a copy over the net :) hope this helps.. and hey i know how frustrating it is to be there and not understand!!

Girl, I hope you’re still working on your Turkish… I live in Turkey and I very much know what it feels like to be hurt by mean Turks. And most of them have crap English as well! Don’t let them get you down; everyone progresses at their own pace and you will get there when you’re ready! And anyway, I’ve been living here for two years and I’m sure your Turkish is better than mine.
Hi, thanks for your words of encouragement. Where in Turkey do you live? I live in Marmaris but am starting to think I dont fit in here because I cant pickup the language at all. I have teach yourself turkish books and thats the only thing I learn from as I cant afford lessons. People say you dont need lessons and just speak but thats simply not working for me. Has anyone got any ideas where I can go for more help?
Thanks

Well, I live in Antalya, and I have the same issues as you—the problem is we live in tourist areas, and everyone speaks English, so we don’t really have to try to speak Turkish. I have a friend who lived in east Turkey with her boyfriend’s family for seven months, and she came back pretty much fluent because no one there knows any English.
Like you, I’m doing the teach yourself thing, just because I find most teachers useless and expensive. I guess we just have to press on and force the Turks to speak Turkish to us, no matter how embarrassing it is for us. Scary.
