live to see the legalization of gay marriage (read all 5 entries…)
How can I help this along?

Support those political candidates who are pro-gay marriage (meaning, not necessarily hyping the project, but leaning towards it)? Being more “out” myself? Applauding those publicly who even mention the subject in a positive way?

Yeah!!!

That's an outSTANDing comment!

Thank you so much….it really helps to remember that when times get rough.

Come to South Africa.

Its legal.

SA has one of the most liberal constitutions in the world.

Same sex unions have now been given the full force of the law as well as civil unions (people living together).

Some aspects I guess will have to be tested in the courts, but in principle it has been done.

Interesting thought...

I didn’t know that about South Africa. How absolutely progressive!

legalize gay marrage

Do you mean in a particular state?

catattack is thankful baseball is right around the corner!

No, I mean federally...

in the federal government, sustained by the Supreme Court.

My partner has no way to obtain health insurance. If she were legally my spouse, she could lay claim to my health benefits as a former government worker. As of now, she’s not recognized.

Doesn’t matter how many states recognize gay marriage. If the feds don’t, she doesn’t get my benefits.

insurance

Thanks for clarifying. That would definitely make a lot of people happy! Is there no way to add anyone to your benefits at all even if they are not related?

Maybe it would be easier to get insurance companies to create such a provision, at lest until the Feds come around. Insurance companies are always looking for ways to make money.

Thank you for your comment.

There are many insurance companies, there are many workplaces, that allow adding a domestic partner to the plan. However, the federal government runs my plan through the insurance company (through ALL the insurance companies they have contracts with). I actually phoned and checked. Nothing happens until the president says so.

Thanks so much for your support. Believe me, it’s support like yours that will exact a change!

(“Whatever happened to the separation of church and state”—I love that!

catattack is thankful baseball is right around the corner!

Thanks...

but that doesn’t work when the federal government is paying 60%+ of your insurance. It’s because I’m a former federal worker. I have already made the inquiries, and the feds won’t cover it, hence the insurance company won’t cover it. But thank you for your kind thoughts.

It is so awful that this is a problem.

It seems like it should be so simple to just legalize it federally, but there’ll always be people voting against something that really has no effect on their own lives because of whatever bigotry they may have. Being from the first state to legalize same-sex marriages makes me hopeful; it’s a (baby)step in the right direction, but until there is a federal law there is no way for equality to exist. Civil union does not = marriage, regardless of how hard people try to suggest that it does. Your predicament makes me very sad, to see good people denied benefits based on something so trivial as their sexual orientation is just sickening. Good luck in your fight, and continue to stand strong! (:

Thank you, femme!

It’s comments like yours that give me hope that we as a nation have turned this corner.

I'm Actually *NOT* in Favor

of Gay marriage as a civil function – nor am I in favor of breeder marriage as a civil function.

Let everybody who wants to have civil unions – and leave the marriage part up to the church, the lodge, the country club or whatever.

The problem is that we have legally confounded both the contract of living together and the celebration of living together. These are two separate things.

Having a member of the clergy administer a civil function (creating the civil contract) is nutty. Anybody can go online, become ordained and then marry people.

I have no problem with just “anybody” presiding over a celebration. But the civil part, the part that says you are legally entitled to inherit from your partner, visit your partner in the hospital, become guardian of your partner’s children in case of their demise, pay partner support and/or child support in the case of dissolution, etc – that ought not to be done by clergy, but by civil experts (mediators, lawyers, counselors).

You're not kidding!

They have enough to cover the wedding AND have a baseball game afterwards.

I'm not so sure there IS much you can do to help it along...

...in any major way.

I think it’s one of those things that is best supported and changed by the way one lives one’s life and also doing the common ordinary things one can.

Live YOUR life like it’s legal, as much as you can do so, vote for those people who seem to support your views, speak intelligently to your friends about it, speak to people who listen as you’re doing here, talk to your kids and nieces and nephews…to kids...intelligently about the subject.

I think people, especially gay people, are entitled to scream and bellow about the unfairness, hate, bigotry, stupidity, and meanness of the whole thing…but I also think that doesn’t get them anywhere very much.

See? Listen to that queer! That’s what I’m talking about…

I see the tide shifting over the past couple years and it is seeming to gain momentum. It can’t be stopped…and though I understand your chagrin and eagerness to have it change NOW…it will be largely sane shortly.

Just hold on a bit longer.

And this is more than just an academic discussion for me.

I have homos living in MY house, too…

And as if THAT weren’t sinful enough, one is half Puerto Rican, half Italian…and the other…shhh…colored!

catattack is thankful baseball is right around the corner!

What you're asking for is patience...

right? Gosh, I’ve been waiting for this for over 50 years now. I’m running out of patience, I must admit.

Thank you so much for your comments. They are much appreciated.

What else can you do but wait?

You may as well be patient.

Look, what are the alternatives?

I suppose I’m about your age, I’m 59, and grew up during the 60’s…I roused the rabble as best I could back then.

But, how would you suggest doing that now?

To ask it another way, what do you imagine might make things better, faster?

I see things changing for the better even over the past couple or three years.

It WILL come.

And I’m not suggesting no one do anything...law suits help, positive public relations help…all these things help the macro picture.

I just think there are few things, if anything, most “normal” folks can do…except…change and tweak those that they can in their sphere of influence.

Small and steady changes make for big ones eventually.

Well…or I could be full of shit…

catattack is thankful baseball is right around the corner!

We're exactly the same age...

and it sounds like we’ve been through similar things as we grew up.

I’m not the kind of person to suggest that chaining ourselves to the county courthouse would be a good thing (although there is a lot of evidence to suggest that such things HAVE moved causes along). But I think if all of us who believed in this cause put our VOTES to work in this election, towards the candidate that gave the most cohesive answer to this issue, THEN we might see some change.

We tried to do that when Bill Clinton was elected. Unfortunately, he was unable to carry out his promises in this regard due to overwhelming resistance from the Dark Side.

God, Cat...you don't realize what we are going to be getting into here.

I am SO jaded, so cynical about our politicians that I have forever refused to vote.

Never once.

And I have to tell you that I was almost sucked in (you’ll pardon the expression) by Clinton.

..ahem…

Almost.

He said all the right things…got elected without my help, I pulled back at just the last minute. I even registered to vote.

And what did the asshole do?

Don’t ask, don’t tell.

That’s just one example, but it seems cogent to our discussion here.

ALL politicians are spineless liars, thieves and idiots.

I want nothing to do with any of them.

Roll in dog shit, smell like dog shit.

A tad cynical…yeah.

redbandita does NOT want to be facebooked, twittered or shared.

As long as they aren't...

...openly atheist. (Just sayin’.)

I TRIED to raise little atheists...

...I don’t think I did too well on that score.

My boy seems to be an atheist.

But…

My oldest girl believes in some sort of a god, but can’t quite tie it down for me.

And the little homo believes in god, she says, but won’t allow me to fence with her long enough to figure out what she’s really talking about.

Thank god, at least, that none of them are religious.

I don’t think I could stand that.

christinet IS BACK!!!!!!!!

I support gay marriage 100%

Although at this particular moment I would probably be looking for a lawyer to handle my gay divorce…..fleeting love and all that….

Wow.

I had no idea. That’s awesome. Thanks for posting, Juniper.

Since gay marriage is legal in Canada

I wonder what the Social Security Administration’s stand is on couples married in Canada.

Generally, they take the most liberal stand available, meaning that if your marriage is recognized in any state and you have spent one night together as married in that state, you are married for their purposes.

There is a legal doctrine that has gotten a lot of play throughout the civil rights movement that says it is illegal to discriminate in the making of public policy against anyone because they are different. Ultimately, this is the essence of basic human rights. It is simply wrong to take away anyone’s rights because they are different.

I hope one day that dogs will be recognized as family members and that landlords will not be able to discriminate against them, but I can see that day is far off when our government is occupying itself with making (crappy) decisions about who gets to marry and who doesn’t.

We’re all going to have dancing in the streets when gay marriage is finally recognized as legitimate by the federal government!
