Embrace my Paganism regularly (read all 11 entries…)
Hmm 1 year ago

Shortly after my previous entry I had a setback, I didn’t get around to doing all that I hoped but I am trying to make myself focus.

I’ve had a fab idea for a Yule Calendar (my son thinks we should call it a Solar Calendar) instead of an advent calendar. Each year they usually want a chocolate one, and while sometimes you can buy ones that go on till the 31st, very often they only go up to the 25th or 24th.

I am going to make one out of 32 matchboxes, with a removeable star to mark the Solstice day as it changes slightly from year to year. The 32nd one will simply say ‘Happy New Year!” because in my household we make a big deal of the first day of the calendar year too. Traditionally I give them each a Calendar after Midnight, and a diary for my husband. I thought it would be extra special if they also had a box to open that day too!

I am making them one each so that when they grow big enough to move away from home, they can continue to use it with no rivalry – should indeed they want to.

Yes indeed

Winter Solstice is what is known as Yule in the Pagan Calendar. It is the celebration of the rebirth of the sun (or sun-child) there are many variations and beliefs surrounding this. Basically, the Solar event which is the Winter Solstice marks the shortest day of the year, and ancient pagans were very concerned with the increase in darkness, and so did all they could to encourage the return of the light. In my family we get up early and go to see the sunrise, while nearest to solstice as we can we switch on the lights for the first time on my Yule tree.
The date at which Christ was born was not midwinter, this fact is widely known and not covered up by the churches. The original choosing of this time to celebrate Christmas was to take over from Yule and eradicate paganism. Many of the Pagan symbols of this time were adopted by the church by way of incorporating then current belief into the Christian religion.

that calender thing is a good idea,
