The King Memorial 3 years ago

The King Memorial was launched today with much fanfare and words from President Bush, Bill Clinton and many others. I’m pleased and proud that King’s contribution to history is being honored. I’m not sure anyone could feel any different. But I couldn’t help feeling as I listened on XM to people at the dedication singing “We Shall Overcome” a sense of despair and sadness over the irony of this event set against the backdrop of war and death occuring across the planet. The words of that hymn seemed to ring out as a very sad and futile answer to the killing and corruption that so many of us want to see come to an end.

The Double Edged Sword

I echo your sentiments, and I was surpised at my melancholy about the announcement. I was at first embarassed that I didn’t know the memorial was in the works. I was later saddened about the state of our society years after King gave his life for a dream of equality. I started thinking about what we as a society do to honor Veteran’s Day or MLK Day…often nothing but take a break from our lives or go to the sale of the day. The men of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity have been at the forefront of this process and I applaud them. I have to simultaneously not think about the statistics that linger about black males and education, vs. black males and incarceration. I want to work hard to treasure more than the King Memorial – but the legacy that was left at the feet of generations to come. Where is the leadership and the next generation of songs to define this phase of civil rights. I may just write about Barak on my own list tonight – some say he is peeking too early. I say his brand of hope and action is right on time.
