Move out of Utah
Why I want to move

There’s a lot to like about Utah. However, I grew up near Washington, D.C., and I’m finding that I miss a lot of stuff about bigger cities that Utah cities just can’t deliver, at least not in abundance. This whole state is ideal for sportos who like biking up and jumping off of cliffs, skiers, hikers, etc., and of course family folks, but people like me with no kids and who don’t get into extreme sports get kind of lost.

Maybe Portland is in my future…

even with kids

there is a lot to like about utah…with or without kids. but as mine get (a bit) older the more i realize i don’t want them growing up around these religious nuts!

Yep, religion...

I knew when I moved here that I was moving into the backyard of a church, so I guess I can’t complain. It’s turning out to be a bigger issue than I anticipated. Many (most?) LDS folks in Utah don’t seem to understand how dominant the LDS culture is here. I guess when you’re in the majority you don’t see how saturated society becomes with majority thought. Not being LDS, I see it a bit too much for my comfort.

I don’t have anything personal against the LDS faith, mind you. I’m just not comfortable when 80% of literally EVERY CONVERSATION with most of the folks I encounter is church related. It’s bugging me.

Moving to a place where people don’t divide each other into FAITH and NON-FAITH will be a breath of fresh air. That’s how it was back east. Hopefully if my wife and I go further west we’ll see the same thing.

Some day…

not that there's anything wrong with that...

i only have a few personal issues with the predominant ‘faith’ here…being a woman in their church i guess i just didn’t fit into the mold. i dunno… people (who were raised here) really don’t realize how much of EVERYTHING has to do with religion. from the school system to state politics. they don’t know the meaning of “seperation of church and state” and that is bothersome. i don’t want the kids to worry about being alienated from activities at school because they aren’t the same religion. and that happens a lot here.

Portland

Yep, everyone that we ran across in Portland seemed friendly and helpful. The streets downtown gave us a few headaches last time we were there (bus-only routes, that sort of thing) but that’s the only negative. Seeing folks out and about on a Sunday was wonderful! Salt Lake City is dead downtown even on weekends; Sundays you’d think the place was deserted.

When I finish my degree it’s going to be very difficult to stay put. Both my wife and I have just about had it.
